The success story of Morgan Cart, Dominique Burri and Maxime Burri
At the dairy and pig farm in Gaec de la Chancelle, France, farmer Morgan Cart decided to completely overhaul calf rearing management. The result? A significant reduction in calf mortality, lower vet costs and less workload – thanks to the switch to Topcalf outdoor housing.
Before the investment in new calf housing, calves were housed in part of the cow barn. Here, summer and winter temperatures were extreme, resulting in many cases of diarrhea and respiratory disease. “20% of the calves didn’t make it to three weeks,” Morgan says.
The entrepreneurs realized this was no longer sustainable. “If we want healthy dairy cows, we have to start with the basics: the calf.”
After an Internet search and a farm visit with a fellow dairy farmer, the preference fell on two Topcalf Quinto XL Calving Huts. The main pluses were:
- Optimal ventilation in summer and winter
- Easy to clean thanks to plastic grids and smooth walls
- Mobile in the yard
- Work with a straight back, more working comfort
Results that matter
- Mortality rate dropped from 20% to 2%
- Lower veterinary costs and less use of antibiotics
- + €3,400 extra revenue from sales of bull calves
- Time savings and job satisfaction for the farmer
“Since we made this investment, our calves are healthier and our work is easier. We haven’t regretted it for a moment.”- Morgan Cart
